Domaine Bott-Geyl
Embodying a rich family tradition dating back to 1795, Domaine Bott-Geyl is a testament to the enduring passion for viticulture. Jean-Christophe Bott, the current heir, has been nurturing this legacy since 1993, infusing a deep respect for both tradition and ecology into every aspect of the vineyard. Under his leadership, the vineyards underwent a transformation to organic in 2000, and then biodynamic in 2002, underpinning the commitment to sustainable winemaking. The vineyard spans across 15 hectares, including 6 Grands Crus and 4 Lieux-dits, each offering their unique qualities. Jean-Christophe Bott ensures low yields, focusing on quality over quantity. In the cellars, vinification is conducted in the most natural and minimalist manner, bringing the uniqueness of each terroir into the wines. Domaine Bott-Geyl's philosophy is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, aiming to preserve and protect the vineyard's ecology for future generations. The result is a collection of wines that truly embody the natural qualities and distinct uniqueness of their terroirs, a testament to the Bott-Geyl family's commitment to excellence and sustainability.
Bott Geyl, Riesling, 2019
The 2019 Riesling from Bott Geyl carries the authentic stamp of its origin, Alsace, a region known for its wine production in France. The Riesling grape, which this wine is composed of, thrives in this region, producing wines that are cherished by wine enthusiasts worldwide.
The winemaking process at Bott Geyl places an emphasis on minimal intervention, allowing the natural characteristics of the grape to shine through. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented using indigenous yeasts. After fermentation, the wine is aged on lees for several months, a process that adds complexity and structure to the finished product.
Upon tasting, one can expect a wine that balances fruitiness and acidity. The wine delivers flavors of ripe apple, pear, and citrus, which are balanced by a refreshing acidity. The alcohol level stands at 13%, contributing to the overall structure and body of the wine.
Historically, Alsace has been a contested region, switching hands between France and Germany. This has resulted in a unique blend of influences that is reflected in the region's wines. Alsace Rieslings, such as this one from Bott Geyl, are known for their ability to age and develop complex flavors over time. This particular vintage, from 2019, is a testament to the region's rich history and winemaking tradition.
